Do You Have Genital Warts?

If you have grey or flesh-colored growths in your genital or anal area, you may have genital warts. Here is what you should do.

First of all, it is important to have the area checked by a doctor. He or she will not only check the area where you found the warts, but also your other genital areas, such as your penis, vulva, perineum, anus, cervix, vagina and urethra. If necessary, he or she may also check your eyes, nose, mouth and larynx.

Once the doctor has confirmed genital warts, they can be treated in several ways, depending on your circumstances. They may disappear on their own without treatment but they may also remain unchanged or even get larger. The doctor may be able to freeze the warts, and then remove the tissue surgically or with heat. He or she may choose instead to prescribe creams for you to apply at home. Follow the directions carefully.

Unfortunately, removing warts does not cure the cause of genital warts, which is the human papillomavirus (HPV).  HPV will remain in your body; however, it may remain dormant and not cause you any problems in the future.

Genital warts are an embarrassing problem but they rarely lead to any more serious problems, such as cancer. However, it is important that your partners know about your diagnosis. If you or your partner is pregnant or hoping to become pregnant, it is important to let your doctor know to avoid passing the virus on to the baby. Treatment for genital warts may result in birth defects.

If you have genital warts, rest assured that they are readily treatable and help is as close as your doctor’s office.
