The vaccine Gardasil is becoming more and more popular in at least one state in the United States: a study has should that, despite a bit of controversy, the vaccine is catching on in California. The study showed that about 25% of all teenage girls had at least a dose of Gardasil in 2007. The vaccine protects against a four different strains of HPV, or the human papilloma virus. This is the virus that is responsible for 90% of all genital warts outbreaks in the U.S. and 70% of cervical cancer cases. The vaccine is fairly new, and while its side effects and long term effects are still unknown, it has been recommended by many different medical associations for young girls.
