The legislature in Oregon has started hearing arguments in a case that may end with group health insurance plans covering the cost of the HPV vaccine. This vaccine would protect young women from both cervical cancer and genital warts. Currently, students who have received the vaccine at their schools have had to pay for it. Some insurance companies will pay for the vaccine, but not all of them do. Currently, Oregon requires insurance to cover the screening tests for cervical cancer but because the vaccine is not required, insurances do not have to cover the cost. The bill requiring them to pay for the vaccine will now go to the Oregon House Human Services Committee for discussion.
