New Zealand Schools Vaccinates Girls Against HPV

The schools in South Canterbury, New Zealand, are preparing to immunize girls age 17 and 18 with the second shot in the three-shot series that prevents cervical cancer and genital warts.  The vaccine will block the human papillomavirus, or HPV.  The first shot in  the series was given last year.  While some parents in other parts of the world have expressed concerns, the principals of the participating schools say they haven’t had any complaints with the vaccination program.  The vaccine is also available to girls under 16, but they must have a signed consent form from their parents.  The shots will be administered by registered nurses.

A report shows that 45 people in the South Canterbury area have be diagnosed with genital warts, although because the STD does not always include visible signs right away, many more may have the infection and not be aware of it.
