Nova Scotia to Offer HPV Vaccine

Girls in the seventh and tenth grades in Nova Scotia, Canada, will have the option of receiving free HPV vaccinations during the upcoming 2009-2010 year. Previously, the vaccine was only offered to those in the seventh grade. The vaccine prevents cervical cancer and the strain of HPV that causes genital warts. By being immunized before they become sexually active, the girls will never contract either cervical cancer or genital warts. The government of Nova Scotia implemented the school immunization program due to the results of a study that showed Nova Scotia had the highest rate of invasive cervical cancer in Canada. Studies also show that 75% of all Canadians will have at least one form of HPV during their life, and the large majority never knows they have the virus.
