The unthinkable has happened: maybe you were in the shower, going to the bathroom, or preparing for a little intimate action with your partner. Then, suddenly, you notice something around your genitalia, something that should definitely not be there. With dread, you look up the symptoms or call your doctor, and you realize exactly what you’re seeing…you have a genital wart.
It’s not the end of the world, but it is something you need to take care of immediately. One genital wart is going to be followed by another and another unless you go to your doctor and get medication. In fact, chances are you’re not going to see just one genital wart, you’re going to see many.
Sometimes, a genital wart will actually go away on its own, but the chances of that happening are pretty low. Instead, you’re going to want to get a cream or other medication from your doctor. In some cases, large genital warts or a genital wart that does not respond to the cream may need to be removed in other ways such as laser surgery or having the wart frozen off.
Note that getting rid of your genital wart doesn’t mean it won’t ever come back. Genital warts are caused by one of several strains of the human papillomavirus, and it stays in the body forever. This means you’re likely to see another genital wart or two pop up every now and then, and you’ll need to get medication each time. However, new advances have shown that they may be a permanent cure for genital warts, although it is still in the experimental phase.
