Hologic, a healthcare company, has received pre-market approval from the FDA for two Cervista tests, HPV HR and HPV 16/18. The current HPV test, which can easily diagnose genital warts and other STDs, does not tell a woman if she has the strain of HPV that causes cervical cancer. Cervista HPV HR, however, can detect all types of high-risk HPV strains. It uses a method similar to that used by Cervista HPV 16/18 to recognize the DNA sequences of the most dangerous HPV strains. While these tests are not available yet, Hologic hopes to have limited tests available within three months.
